Artist Statement
“When making a painting I have learned not to be limited by stringent boundaries, but to search for balance and harmony in the blending and manipulation of shape, color and subtle textural variation. A combination of landscape and horizon emerge through the process and are woven together in the rhythms of color, sometimes calm, often dramatic.
I have found that several thinly painted layers are important in my work, as they function together to create an intricate textural network that is fundamental to the finished landscape image. This technique nicely coincides with my landscape theme as the gradual build-up of color, form and paint can suggest natural geologic and atmospheric layers that occur in nature.
Generally I avoid a single ‘vantage point’ in my landscape paintings. Upon viewing one of these images, and with a little imagination, one can mentally enter the landscape from different locations and trace a new route every time in the maze of rocks, valleys, waves, and passages within. This is a great way to capture the viewer’s attention and it certainly holds mine. It makes looking at these vast spaces mentally stimulating and contemplative. I enjoy making these imaginary landscapes and hope you will find them interesting as well.”
